    Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H - Bios Freezing

    Hello all!

    I have been frantically searching for help for this one but can't seem to figure it out. I just got a new Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H motherboard with an Intel 3570k and got everything to boot up smoothly. However, I've noticed that whenever I boot into my OS (from an SSD drive) the bios becomes inaccessible and requires me to reset the cmos everytime. It seems to be a known issue of bios freezing but I have tried most things on SATA operation and it seems to be linked with booting into the OS. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? It's a strange problem and I'm not quite sure how to research help on it. XD

    Hmmm thats interesting... have you tried updating the bios?

    Have you tried running memtest?

    Also I'd try swapping out a hard drive or ssd to see if that works.

    Well, ran those tests and to no avail. I found a work around, albeit a strange one. I noticed in my constant rebooting that sometimes it would boot halfway into the bios and the cmos reset always resolved it. So I tried turning off my power supply, waiting 5 seconds, turning it back on, and boom, I could get into my bios no problem. I wish I had a way to explain this technically or what not but I'm just going to say sweet sciencey magic.

    On the plus side, my new i5-3570k is successfully overclocked to 4.3 GHz and idling at temps of 31c. I'm about to run some stress tests but so far I am loving this processor. HUGE upgrade from my Phenom II x4 965 BE. Also, the NZXT Havik 140 cooler is amazing. Before overclocking, my CPU was idling around 17-22c! I have never seen a computer idle that low before, haha.

    Hmm... you shouldn't have to shut down the power supply every time. That's weird. Did you update the BIOS yet? The UD5H is at BIOS revision F7, but if you go to their website, a beta bios, F8c is available. That might solve your problems.

    Yeah, I updated to F8c and it's still giving the same problem. I think I am going to contact Gigabyte tomorrow and see what they say. I really don't want to have to disassemble my build and put it together but if I have to, I will. -_-;

    The weirdest thing is just how stable it is elsewise, though. I really can't figure out why it's tweaking out in the bios itself but when in the OS, it's working great.

    Does any other functions work? If you hit the ESC key does the splash screen go away? Can you get into the boot menu? Reason I ask is because sometimes USB keyboards don't like to work in boot. That's why I have a PS/2 keyboard hanging around for those situations.

    Yep, all of the keys work perfectly tough the boot menu, relying on the GUI bios in this motherboard, freezes identically as does trying to get into the bios. Unfortunately, this motherboard doesn't have any PS/2 ports on the back so I got lucky in that my usb keyboard(s) work flawlessly on it.

    Oh hmm... that's interesting. I'd have to guess it might just be a bad board or something. Maybe try removing everything that's unnecessary for day to day use: dvd drive, storage drive, graphics card, etc. and seeing if that changes things. Maybe even revert to the secondary BIOS to see if that helps too. If nothing else works, you might just have a bad board.

    I actually recently reviewed the Z77X-UD3H and it was an amazing board. Tons of features and rock solid stability. Definitely didn't have any BIOS issues whatsoever. Possibly the most effortless overclocking of the i5 3570K to 4.8GHz known to man.

    Yeah, I tried that too. I have an inkling that the board is bad but sad days while I have to wait for a new one. @.@ Darn online purchases.

    In other questions, what are safe temps for the i5-3570k? I am hesitant to exceed the 30c idle and when I go from 4.3 to 4.4 ghz it jumps to 42c instantly.

    Idle temps don't really matter. It's the load temps that matter. What I aim for is to keep load temps under 75c after a full 30 minute run. The best way to test is to use Prime95, AIDA64, or Intel Burn Test.
